Applied Biological Services for mCDR and Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE)

I provide independent biological expertise to support the responsible design, testing, and evaluation of marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) approaches, with a particular focus on Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE). My services translate biological research into practical decision support for companies, research consortia, NGOs, and public agencies working on mCDR pilots, experiments, and governance. The goal is to ensure that organismal and ecosystem responses are explicitly evaluated alongside chemical and engineering performance.

Core Service Areas

  1. Biological Risk & Impact Assessment

I deliver quantitative evaluations of how OAE may affect marine organisms and ecosystems, including:

  • Exposure–response analysis
  • Identification of vulnerable species and life stages
  • Threshold-based risk screening
  • Precautionary interpretation of uncertainty

These assessments support environmental impact evaluations (EIA), pilot planning, and regulatory discussions related to mCDR.

  1. Experimental Design & Biological Testing

I design and lead deployment-relevant biological experiments tailored to mCDR and OAE applications, including:

  • Realistic exposure scenarios (non-equilibrated vs equilibrated TA additions)
  • Multi-stressor testing (OAE × OA× warming × hypoxia)
  • Life-stage-specific response evaluation

These experiments provide empirical evidence needed for feasibility and safety assessment of marine carbon dioxide removal approaches.

  1. Biological Data Analysis & Evidence Synthesis

I analyze and synthesize complex biological datasets to produce:

  • Species- and life-stage-specific sensitivity profiles
  • Quantified uncertainty and confidence bounds
  • Comparative vulnerability assessments

This includes both project-specific analyses and synthesis across existing studies on ocean acidification, alkalinity manipulation, and multiple stressors.

  1. Monitoring Design & Biological Indicators

I support the development of biologically meaningful monitoring strategies for mCDR and OAE projects, including:

  • Selection of indicator species and biological endpoints
  • Early-warning stress metrics
  • Threshold-based interpretation frameworks
  • Integration of biological and carbonate chemistry measurements

These tools help ensure that monitoring programs detect biological risk before irreversible ecological impacts occur.

  1. Science–Policy Support

My role is to ensure that biological impacts of marine carbon dioxide removal are transparently and defensibly represented in climate intervention discussions. I translate biological evidence into forms usable for decision-making, including:

  • Scientific opinions and technical brief
  • Contribution to precautionary frameworks
  • Support for stakeholder and regulatory engagement
